Systems Biology, Metabolomics, and Cancer Metabolism

In this issue, presented recent breaththroughs in cancer metabolism with a data-driven approach.

Recent breakthroughs in cancer metabolism include the

1. identification of an alternative glycolytic pathway in proliferative cells
2. an essential role for the serine synthesis pathway in breast cancer.

and more importantly

3. Essential requirement of large amounts of the nonessential amino acid glycine for rapidly proliferating cancer cells (i.e. they require  large amounts of the nonessential amino acid glycine, which has clear and direct implications for cancer therapy).
